Thinning Out The Load Before You Move
Moving junk makes absolutely no sense at all. Whether you’re a DIY or your hiring a mover, think about it, why move it again and stick it in another junk draw or pay the mover to move more stuff you forgot you had. Empty the junk or junk draws and say goodbye and let it go!!!
You will start to feel lighter already.
Give yourself 2 weeks before the day of the move, you will need it to not pull your hair out on day of move. Each day of the two weeks pick a room and or a closet and give it a few hours to take time to really think about what is truly necessary to take and what’s ready to go, as your junk draws you need to decide, what am I still doing with this or when would I possibly wear this again and sort and get them in boxes. Oh, yes, forgot, bring in 3 boxes in to each room or closet and set one for keeps one for donations and one for garbage.
Remember to set aside all the daily toiletries for a few days in new place, don’t overdo it, but your essentials like tooth brush tooth paste mouth wash towels, shampoo’s soap, some kitchen things like sponge and paper towels. Some people like to bring a screw driver, hammer and hanging nails to get pictures up quickly so they don’t get broken, which is always another good idea. Put all these in a box or gym bag for you to carry along where it won’t get lost in the huge amount of other stuff being packed on a truck.
There’s a rule of thumb scenario, if you haven’t worn it in a year you won’t wear it again. So, that item goes and you could use this for the other items in your belongings, when did I need this and when would I possibly use this again, remember the 3 boxes and what there for. Now pay attention for duplicates, are you packing double and triple of same stuff you don’t need, like in the kitchen, this is not a restaurant, lol.
In your bathroom and your cabinets in the kitchen also, check expiration dates, how many times must you move with something outdated. Now there may be items with a good date but as far as food products, open them and smell them, you might want to get a new with your new residents.
And please remember, someone out there in the world could use something you might think of throwing out, so be mindful and give as much to charity as possible, a little kindness goes a long way.
Reminders:
Some other things to remember is your banking changes, your doctor changes if there are any. If you have an ongoing prescription, you need to transfer that. Insurances, and if your renting make sure all your renters insurance changes and all that needs to be addressed is taken care of. Do you have any memberships that need to be closed or transferred or newly opened in your new residents? Did you have any outstanding dry cleaning that you haven’t picked up yet?
If you are traveling some distance, get your vehicle checked and properly tuned and check tires and all necessary for road trip. It is a good idea to pack some essentials for car like bandages, bug spray, tissues and paper towels, phone chargers, if you have children, plenty of games and entertainment especially for a long trip. Remember your sunglasses, your reading glasses, maybe a small cooler bag with cool drinks and some easy to eat non-messy snacks.
